What is CD?

About Coeliac Disease (CD)
Coeliac Disease (CD), is a lifelong condition that can affect both children and adults, where the intestine has an abnormal immune reaction to gluten when present in the diet. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, oats and rye. When someone with CD consumes gluten their immune system reacts by destroying the part of the small intestine which absorbs vital nutrients, which can lead to anemia, fatigue weight loss and malnutrition. CD is a genetic disease and relatives of those who have been diagnosed have an increased risk of having the condition. The cause of Coeliac Disease is unknown and some people do not have symptoms when they eat gluten. However damage to the small bowel will still occur if the individual continues to eat gluten.

Physical Symptoms can include: Abdominal cramping, Bloating, Anemia, Fatigue, Weakness, Headaches, Weight loss or gain, Chronic digestive problems, Diarrhoea, Dental enamel problems, Muscle spasms (magnesium and/or calcium deficiency), Failure to thrive in children are just some of the many symptoms associated with CD. This list is by no means all inclusive.
